15 Interesting Facts About Chihuahuas

#7 Regarded as the oldest dog breed in North America

Today's Chihuahua most likely descends from a primal dog breed from Mexico that was worshiped by the Aztecs and Toltecs - the Techichi. Images of these little dogs have already been discovered on vases and wall paintings that are said to be over 2000 years old.

How the development from Techichi to Chihuahua really happened has not been sufficiently clarified to this day. What is certain, however, is that travelers from the USA discovered the small dogs in the province of "Chihuahua" at the end of the 19th century and took them to America.

#8 The Chihuahua wasn’t actually called a Chihuahua

The name Chihuahua comes from the Mexican province where the conquerors met the little dog. Initially, however, the four-legged friend was called the "Arizona dog" or "Texas dog" in America. Among tourists, the four-legged friends were primarily known as the "smallest dog in the world".

#9 The Chihuahua can have any coat color

The American Kennel Club allows the Chihuahua any color variation that the dog can be - solid, marked or spotted. Whether white, brown, black, chocolate, red, cream-colored - hardly any other breed has such a variety of colors. There are also two coat varieties: long-haired and short-haired Chihuahuas.
