Breed Review: Alaskan Klee Kai (20 Pics)

#4 They were very fond of dogs, and could not take the steps required in any breeding work – culling puppies that were genetically unsuitable for the program.

As a result, the quality deteriorated, while Linda's puppies got better and better.

They decided to curtail their program, and all the dogs were sold to Mrs. Spurlin, which significantly expanded the gene pool. In 1986, a friend of Linda, familiar with her Alaskan Kli-kai breeding program, brought his mother to the nursery.

#5 Mrs. Eileen Gregory, lived in Colorado and fell in love with these dogs and asked for some photos to show them when she returns to her homeland

Returning home, she could not forget the Kli-kai and began to pester Linda with offers to introduce the world to a new breed. Linda S. Spurlin recalls this:

At that time, I was firmly convinced that the gene pool was still very small and it was too early to introduce dogs to the public.

In 1988, she still sells a couple of cli-kai to Mrs. Gregory, like feeding and caring for her 30 dogs is already a hefty cost. This was a mistake as she would then be inundated with letters and inquiries from people wanting a puppy and reporters wanting to know the history of the breed.

#6 The public interest in her was amazing, given that at that time the breed did not yet have a name.

Linda began to come up with a name for the breed and turned to the language of the Eskimos.

The ideal turned out to be Kli-Kai, which means "little dog" in Eskimo. To mention the place of origin, the name of the state was added, and at first, the breed was called Klee Kai of Alaska, then became simply Alaskan Klee Kai.
