Breed Review: American Bulldog (18 Pics)

#7 Then the farmers did not attach importance to the appearance of the American Bulldog – a large dog with a massive muzzle and strong paws.

The breed was valued not for its exterior, but for its working qualities. Attempts to place the Bulldogs of the South on the American Kennel Club (AKC) list have long been unsuccessful. Preference was given to foreign breeds, and the "immigrants" from the colonies were considered ordinary and unworthy of attention.

#8 In addition, the AKC has already registered the breed “Bulldog”, and southerners would have to think about a new name to avoid confusion when popularizing ambulances in the United States.

Georginsky large, exhibition, worker, southern white, old - all these names referred specifically to the American Bulldog. Until the middle of the 20th century, it was not registered by any canine organization and could not boast of an official pedigree.

#9 Only by the 60s the name “American Pit Bulldog” was assigned to the breed.

At the same time, the first standard was presented to everyone's attention. Soon American Bulldog was registered by most canine organizations. The dog breeders were captivated by her imposing appearance combined with her impeccable service skills. Increasingly, bulldogs were also bred for military departments and police stations. In comparison with other dogs, American Bulldog was distinguished by endurance, discretion, and incredible flair inherited from distant ancestors. Representatives of this breed were also used during the search for survivors in major disasters.
