Bladder stones
Bladder stones are the most common cause when your dog has blood in the urine. The so-called struvite or oxalate stones are found in the kidneys, bladder, ureter, or urethra. They cause severe pain in the affected animal. Most of the time, small amounts of urine are deposited.
Infections
Infections of the genital organs and urinary tract, such as a bladder infection, can cause blood in the urine. In addition to the discolored urine, there are other symptoms, including increased urination with pain and fever. In addition, affected animals are increasingly licking their genitals.
Prostate infections
Blood in the urine can also indicate a prostate infection. Other symptoms are a pain when passing urine and fever. The affected animals also tend to walk a little stiffly. A laboratory test and antibiotic treatment are necessary. If the disease progresses more seriously, surgery or even castration may be unavoidable.
Poisoning
If the dog ingests rat poison, it leads to blood clotting disorders. Blood in the urine is not uncommon. If poisoning is suspected, the administration of an antidote is life-saving.
