The Dog as a Hobby Alongside the Job
If you want to integrate a dog into your life despite a 40-hour week, you have to proceed carefully. Simply choosing a dog from the breeder or the animal shelter is not an option for working people. The question of the breed of the four-legged friend is very important. In addition, it must be clarified in advance whether the dog is allowed to come to the office or should stay at home alone. Depending on this, the decision for a certain breed is made. Basically: dogs of full-time employees have little to do during the day. You sleep and doze a lot – whether at home or in the office. The mental and physical workload takes place before and after work. This is sometimes exhausting after a long day. Master and mistress must be ready for it.
Office Dogs: Uncomplicated Contemporaries
Taking the dog to the office is a great idea for full-time professionals. Waldi has company during the day and is also with his people. He also comes out during the lunch break. Dog breeds that are suitable for the office are people-friendly, even-tempered, and don’t bark much. They also have a high threshold to noise and new situations. This is especially true of the following breeds:
Labradoodle
The Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador and a Poodle. Intelligence, adaptability, and an uncomplicated manner characterize his nature. He is very open and sociable without being intrusive. That makes him an ideal office dog.
Pug
The lively pug is also a great colleague for the office. When there is action, he’s alive and doing his best. But he can just as easily laze around and doze off when he is not needed. In addition, it barks little and is not prone to stress or overstimulation.
Maltese
The little white supposed lapdog is a really big one: He can adapt extremely well to new situations and is very docile. He observes closely and quickly recognizes what is being asked of him. He then willingly implements that. Because he is also a loyal soul and does not like to be alone, he can be perfectly taken to the office. The Maltese is a wonderful working dog.
Dogs That Can Stay Home Alone
Due to their relaxed temperament and the moderate urge to move, the following dog breeds can sometimes stay at home alone longer. However, keep in mind that calm dogs also have a social nature. Two dogs are therefore also an option for working people. Nobody is alone at home.
Bulldogs
French bulldogs are very adaptable animals – and lazy too. You have fewer problems with it when your master or mistress is away for a few hours. You overslept or doze off the time. However, the animals are considered resentful: If you do stay away longer than planned, Pfiffi could be destructive.
Leonberger
Cozy, calm, and totally relaxed: Leonberger’s reputation as a relaxed fellow precedes it. And it really is. If the owner wants to go for a walk, that’s just as fine as when nothing is going on. The Leonberger can easily stay alone – sometimes for several hours. Of course, he is also happy to have company, perhaps with a second dog.
Retriever
If you are looking for a family dog for working people, a Golden Retriever or Labrador Retriever is the best choice. Retrievers are very sociable, friendly, and open animals. They feel right at home in families. However, they are also characterized by their adaptability. If they have a second dog with them, they like to stay at home for several hours.
Our Recommendation: Stay Away From Particularly Lively and Highly Intelligent Dogs!
Races that are particularly intelligent or who want to move more than average are not suitable for working people. Dogs that like to bark a lot or show pronounced territorial behavior are also not a good choice. These include, for example:
- Border collies
- Australia Shepherds
- Most terriers
Intelligent, active dogs are extremely time-consuming and easily overstimulated. They also get bored easily. Therefore, they are neither suitable as office dogs nor to stay at home alone for long periods of time. Even-tempered, docile, and adaptable dogs are the best choices for full-time animal lovers.
