How to Care for a Shar-Pei?

Shar-Pei, despite their fighting and hunting past, today are completely domestic dogs. They cannot be kept on the street and fed with anything. Such negligence can cost a pet not only health but also life. What should the owner do in order for his pet to look good and live a long time?

Shar-Pei Care

These dogs belong in the apartment. For them, you need to pick up a secluded corner with a soft couch. It is better that the place is protected from drafts, direct sunlight. The litter material should be natural, hypoallergenic.

It is recommended to feed the dog at the same time after the walk. The bowls are washed every time a meal is over. It is better to put oilcloth and rubber napkins under the bowls.

Walking

They go for a walk with Shar-Pei twice a day. Places for this are chosen spacious and deserted. You can even let your pet off the leash and let it warm up properly. However, if there are people or other animals nearby, the Shar-Pei should not be let off the leash. A muzzle will also be useful.

A suitable walking time for these dogs is 40-60 minutes. In winter, do not forget that your pet needs warm outerwear.

Nail Trimming

Pets that are outdoors for a long time will not need this procedure. And those who live in an apartment need to trim their nails about once a month. The main thing is not to reach the vein with the pruner. Otherwise, the Shar-Pei will hurt, and bleeding will open.

Ear Cleaning

Due to the fact that the representatives of this breed have too narrow ear canals and poor ventilation, the infection quickly develops in them. Therefore, you need to pay special attention to caring for your pets’ ears. They need to clean their ear canals with a cotton swab and lotion several times a week. You also need to cleanse the skin around the auricle.

Hair Care

You do not need to comb out Shar Pei so often. If there is no molting, then 2 times a week is quite enough. When there is a change of coat, you will have to take up the brush every day.

Wrinkles should be given special attention. You will have to wipe them once every two weeks. Dirt is thoroughly removed from the muzzle, the area around the tail, paws. If your dog gets dirty, don’t bathe it right away. It is best to clean up the excess with a damp cotton swab.

Teeth Cleaning

It is necessary to remove plaque from Shar-Pei teeth regularly. To do this, you can use special brushes, pastes, and teethers. Sometimes the canines and incisors are allowed to be treated with lemon juice.

Vaccination

Like any other dog, the Shar-Pei needs vaccinations. They will help to avoid the occurrence of serious and dangerous diseases. Vaccinations against distemper, rabies, enteritis are mandatory. At the request of the owner, the dog can be vaccinated against parasites.

Females Care

During heat, Shar Peis need to be given a lot of attention. It is important to ensure that the pet does not communicate with other dogs, does not catch a cold, and does not catch an infection. Hygiene comes first. Special shorts can be purchased for the dog.

In general, caring for Shar-Pei is not so difficult. The main thing is to give it enough time and attention.
