Pug: Diet and Feeding Chart

Knowing about the tendency of pugs to overeat, you should take care of the norms and diet of the animal’s feeding. For representatives of the breed, a protein diet containing vegetables and fruits is considered ideal. Calorie content depends on the age of the animal, its metabolism, and the level of activity.

For example, 730 calories are enough for 8 kg pugs every day. Sterilized and castrated individuals, couch potatoes need less nutritious food. Puppies’ food should be nutritious and nutritious, as opposed to food for adults.

Dry Food for Pugs

The choice of feed is carried out according to several criteria. The age, lifestyle of the animal, state of health are taken into account. In the composition, the first place in the list must necessarily be meat, and the type of meat is indicated and does not have an abstract form. For example, you should give preference to feeds that contain chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, or a specific type of fish.

Fats are essential in addition to protein because they provide the pet with energy. Therefore, the composition should contain sources of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, which contribute to the health of the skin and coat. Fats from animal sources – chicken, salmon, not vegetable sources.

Fiber-rich carbohydrates help improve digestion. Rice and buckwheat are used as carbohydrates.

Commercial dry food must contain a minimum of 22% protein for puppies or 18% protein for adult dogs. The fat content should be at least 8% for puppies and 5% for adults.

Most contain “empty” ingredients with no nutritional value. They are not absorbed by the body but gives a feeling of satiety. Variants containing soy, wheat, corn, flavors, preservatives, artificial colors should be avoided. When feeding a pug with poor quality food, the animal has digestive upset, diarrhea, skin irritation, rash, and itching.

Natural Feeding For Pug

The basis of the natural diet of pugs is muscle meat – turkey, lamb, chicken. It is permissible to alternate meat with offal (heart, scar, tongue, trachea, cheek, liver, spleen, brains, kidneys, testes). The internal organs are rich in nutrients (vitamins and minerals). For example, the liver is rich in vitamin A, B vitamins, and contains iron. But, despite the benefits of offal, they should be given in limited quantities. If we talk about the liver, then its amount should not exceed 5% of the diet. Most of the by-products are cooked.

It is advisable to give your pet raw fleshy bones with cartilage, tendons, gnawing which the pug will not be able to damage the teeth. It is permissible to pamper your pet with wings, chicken necks, ribs, chicken legs.

An obligatory part of the pug’s diet with natural feeding should be vegetables and fruits. But not all pets enjoy these foods. Therefore, it is recommended to grind vegetables and fruits with a grater or blender. Chopped vegetables often remain in the bowl. They select fruits and vegetables that are low in starch and carbohydrates. Leafy vegetables are useful, for example, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, as well as carrots, zucchini, pumpkin, celery, herbs, and from fruits and berries – blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples.

It is optimal if the pug’s diet consists of 50% meat (offal) or fish, 30% complex carbohydrates (rice, buckwheat), 20% vegetables, and fruits.

You can include fermented milk products in the diet, for example, low-fat kefir, yogurt, cottage cheese, but the fat percentage should not be zero. It is enough to give fermented milk products once a week. It is recommended to mix them with a raw egg.

If the nutritional value of natural products is insufficient, then it is necessary to additionally give the pet a vitamin-mineral complex, the choice of which will be helped by the veterinarian, taking into account the compiled diet.

How to Feed Pug Puppies

Puppies are fed 4 times a day with easily digestible food, which is a source of energy for the whole day. In the new house, at first, the puppy continues to be fed with the food that they ate from the breeder. As you grow older, the number of meals is reduced to 3 times a day. From six months, babies are fed twice a day – in the morning and in the evening. Between meals, it is allowed to give treats as a reward in the course of training.

Overweight in a pug is a reason for making changes in the diet or replacing the brand of dry food.
