Understanding the Physiology of Cat Grooming

They have rough tongues covered in tiny, backward-facing barbs called papillae, which help them to remove dirt and debris from their fur. When grooming, they also produce saliva, which has natural antibacterial properties that help to keep their skin and fur healthy. The act of grooming also stimulates the production of natural oils in their skin, which helps to nourish their fur, promote hair growth, and keep it shiny and healthy-looking. In addition to that, grooming also helps to regulate a cat’s body temperature and can serve as a means of self-soothing when they are feeling stressed or anxious.
