Yorkshire Terrier: Coat Colors

Lovely little dogs with luxurious flowing hair, very brave and attractive, all this is about Yorkshire Terriers. This breed is very popular today, especially for keeping in city apartments. They are very compact, do not take up much space, and are easy to educate and train. To correctly choose a puppy, if you plan to participate in exhibitions, you need to have an idea of the breed standard and color types. Unscrupulous breeders often try to sell a dog that is far from the standard for a high price.

Yorkshire Terrier Info

Yorkies are very loyal and courageous dogs, attached to the owner. In defense of their owner, they can rush to a dog, even much larger than him. They have high intelligence and lend themselves well to various kinds of training. However, the Yorkie is not a circus dog. They will not “dance to the tune.” These are wayward animals with their own opinion, which will obey only those who can become the leader for the dog.

Important! The upbringing of a pet needs to be dealt with from early childhood, otherwise, the owner risks getting an uncontrollable, aggressive dog rushing at all living things.

Yorkshire Terriers get along well in families with children, taking babies for granted. However, they are unlikely to arrange active games with them, indulging and wallowing. These are very balanced and sedate dogs who know their worth.

But the main feature of the breed is their coat. Long, flowing with an extraordinary steel shade. The pet is absolutely devoid of undercoat, therefore, in the cold season, they are often dressed up in different warm suits. But in the summer they show themselves in all their glory. If the owner takes good care of his pet’s coat, then he always looks like a king.

Yorkie Colors

The description of the Yorkshire Terrier breed, recognized by the official canine communities, gives a description of the only correct color of the breed representatives. The pet should have long, gray-steel-gray hair that goes down on both sides of the body from the neck to the tip of the tail. At the same time, the hairs at the base will be darker than at the tips, and the edge of the tail also tends to a dark shade.

At the same time, the muzzle of the animal has a tint called “golden tan”. The brown coat should not go over the pet’s neck. Red feet are allowed, but not higher than the elbows. This is the only possible and correct color, which is acceptable at exhibitions and is appreciated by experts. In this case, the animals are not cut short, leaving the hair flowing freely along the sides of the dog.

It is noteworthy that little Yorkie puppies are born almost black, with only small red marks on the ears and paws. Over time, up to about one and a half months, all-black hairs go away. Leaving behind only a gray-steel coat.

Important! Yorkies are completely devoid of undercoat, so in winter they can be very cold. In this case, a wide variety of clothes for all seasons is presented for them in specialized salons.

It is noteworthy that the representatives of the breed take the final color only at the age of 2 – 3 years. During this time, the coat can easily transform from completely black to almost silver.

Other Types of Yorkshire Terriers: Coat Colors

Despite the long-established and always applied breed standard, breeders often experiment with color, creating the most incredible and attractive specimens. Such dogs do not have the opportunity to lead a show career, but they become the best pets, pleasing the eyes of their owners.

Important! Often, Yorkies with non-standard but attractive colors are even more expensive than their standard counterparts.

Among dogs that do not fall under the standard, the following are especially popular:

  • Biewer Terrier
  • Biro Terrier (Biro Yorkie; Biro Yorkshire Terrier)
  • Choco Yorkie
  • Yorkshire Gold Dust
  • Mermaid Yorkie

Each type of dog differs from the standard in color. However, such dogs look no less attractive than their standard relatives, and sometimes even surpass them in appearance. Some breed lovers are specifically looking for just such dogs.

Biewer Terrier

A pet with a black and white coat, the breed was bred in Germany in 1988 as a result of a gene mutation, which led to the active appearance of white and black on the animal’s coat.

There are two main types of beavers. In the former, black and red spots are present only on the head, the rest of the body is covered with white hair. In the latter, the main color is white, but black and red spots can be located on the back and head.

Representatives of this subtype have excellent health and are very cheerful. An attractive appearance makes such Yorkies in demand, despite the lack of recognition of the cynological communities.

Biro Terrier

It is not a separate breed like beavers. In the genetic grid of these pets, the gene that is responsible for the presence of black hair on the body of the animal is completely absent. Typically, representatives of the subtype are either white with brown spots on the body, or completely golden. The standard of the subtype has not yet been determined, due to the fact that it is too young.

Choco Yorkie

Dog handlers do not recognize such Yorkies as a separate breed, although one cannot but admit their attractiveness. The entire body of the pet is covered with chocolate-colored hair. The shade ranges from milk chocolate to dark chocolate. Dogs are distinguished by excellent health and docile nature.

Yorkshire Gold Dust

Dogs of this subtype have a golden or cream-colored coat. Sometimes there are individuals with white breasts. Representatives of the subtype are often confused with beavers.

Mermaid Yorkie

The breed is called a salon and is artificially bred by crossing terriers with other breeds. They are larger than standard Yorkies and have a completely golden, cream, or silvery long coat. Such pets need proper care. Their coat is much tougher to the touch than that of congeners. It requires constant brushing and the use of special cosmetics.

All Yorkies, regardless of color, are considered good companions. They are quite obedient if they were competently brought up, as well as courageous and unpretentious in their care. As a pet, it is ideal in urban conditions for seniors and families with children.
