The Schnauzer or Standard Schnauzer (Mittelschnauzer) is a dog breed that originated in Germany in at least the 14th–15th century.
The ancestors of Mittels include two types of dogs:
Peat dogs that lived at the end of the New Stone Age (Neolithic) and at the rise of the Bronze Age, i.e. in the period before our era.
Beaver dogs bred by German aristocrats in the 7th century.
The ancient origin of the Mittelschnauzers is proved by the canvases of famous artists of the 15th and 16th centuries, who very often painted their favorites. Such examples include the works of the famous artist Albrecht Durer.
