The Labrador Retriever is a well-built, medium-sized, short dog with a strong, athletic, proportional build, which allows it to be a hunting retriever dog; her very essence, endurance, and hardening help her for hours and in difficult conditions to hunt waterfowl and prey that live in mountainous areas. They have character and the ability to win at exhibitions, so they are good family companions. Physical and mental characteristics distinguish the breed as a successful retriever with a strong temperament suitable for a variety of hunting pursuits.

The most outstanding characteristics of the Labrador Retriever are a short, thick, waterproof coat, an otter tail, a sharply defined head with a wide back of the skull and a moderate transition; powerful jaws and “kind” eyes, expressing his character, intelligence, and good temperament.

The proportions are slightly less; body length (distance from shoulder to rump) is slightly greater than height at withers (vertical distance from withers to ground). The distance from the elbow to the ground is equal to one-half of the height at the withers. The brisket should reach the elbows, but not very deep. The body must be of an adequate length so that the gait is straight, free, and skillful; however, the shape of the dog should not be short, the body should not be too long, and the legs should not be tall and thin. Physical fitness: physical fitness, bone mass and everything else are commensurate with each other. Skinny individuals do not meet the breed standard; and also unwanted lumpy clumsy individuals. Labrador retrievers should be muscular (developed) and not overweight. The ratio of body length to shoulder height should be approximately 12/11.

The true temperament of a Labrador Retriever is as distinctive of this breed as the otter tail. The ideal character is kind, friendly, obedient, willing to please, and not aggressive towards humans or animals. The Labrador possesses many qualities that people like: its gentle demeanor, intelligence and ability to adapt make it the ideal dog. Aggression against humans or animals or any sign of shyness in an adult is a vice.
