The Eskimo dog is 23 to 38 centimeters tall and weighs between two and 16 kilograms. He has a smooth, double-layered coat that is mostly white but can also be cream-colored.

The American Eskimo Dog sheds extremely. Frequent brushing out of dead hair prevents the worst, but the vacuum cleaner will still remain an important helper in the household.

The American Eskimo Dog is essentially a re-import. He came from Germany to the USA as a Spitz and was bred further there. He is not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) but is recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
