The Australian Silky Terrier is a fun, intelligent, lovely character, distrustful of strangers, great for city life, and used as a family dog. The Silky Terrier is one of two Australian terrier breeds, the other is the Australian Terrier. The breed was bred in the early 1800s, by crossing the local blue and fawn terriers with the dandy dinmont. The breed, called the Silky Terrier in the United States, is known in its homeland as the Australian Silky Terrier.
The body is moderately low and slightly long in comparison with the height at the withers. The chest is moderately deep and broad. Ribs well sprung up to the strong lumbar region. The topline is always straight (in stance and in movement).
The Silky Terrier is characterized by a mobile, energetic type of terrier. The behavior is cheerful, friendly, responsive. Excessive shyness or nervousness is considered a vice.
