Basenji is a unique breed formed as a result of natural selection. That is, the person did not participate in this process. The first mentions of it can be traced back to antiquity. Archaeologists found mummies of dogs similar in the structure during excavations of the Egyptian pyramids. In legends, these animals are attributed to the human level of intelligence.

Character

Despite the fact that the Basenji is considered an excellent companion dog, do not forget that the blood of hunting dogs flows in its veins. This is a very well-mannered animal, with exceptionally high temperament and independence. Basenji, before executing each command, preliminarily thinks it over for a minute and it so happens that it may come to a different opinion from the owner. Therefore, you should begin to train the dog as early as possible, and you should approach this wisely and in no case put pressure on it, otherwise, the result may be exactly the opposite.

Basenji can be characterized as follows:

• A graceful, playful, energetic animal with a light, elegant gait. If the Basenji does not see the outlet of his violent energy, he becomes a destroyer – such a dog should not be allowed to get bored.
• The coat is short, bright in color, easy to care for. In comparison with other breeds, this pet practically does not shed.
• The Basenji is a compact, medium-sized dog.
• Balanced and curious at the same time, inquisitive.
• The animal needs sufficient physical and mental activity.

Temperament

The Basenji will become an obedient and friendly pet if you find the right approach to it:

• To succeed in raising, training a dog, find the right motivation for it. Keep your workouts short, fun, and active.
• Please note that the Basenji only chooses one owner.
• To make the Basenji’s acquaintance with your guest go without incident, ask your friend to wait for the dog to take the first step towards him. You do not need to make sudden movements, shout, and even more so approach the dog from behind.
• Basenji get along well with the face of their breed, especially, they appeared in the house with puppies. Other dogs and pets of these species may be aggressive.
• Basenji is an excellent guard with developed guard instincts who will protect both your family and your home.

Care

Basenji are very clean dogs, which is why they are often compared to cats. These animals do not emit an unpleasant odor, therefore, Basenji is bathed only once every few months. As for wool, it sheds all year round, but not actively. Brushing every week will completely prevent the possibility of fur in the house. Basenji teeth, like other dogs, require care. Brush them every week and your dog won’t get tartar or bad breath. Check your ears thoroughly weekly for inflammation and signs of infection. As for the claws, they are cut off as needed. As a rule, this is done once a month.

Caring for a Basenji is easy:

• The Basenji has short hair that only needs to be brushed occasionally.
  If the street is dirty, the “Basenji” should be bathed and thoroughly dried after bathing.
• Dogs should trim their nails every 4-6 weeks, otherwise, they may grow into the pads.
• Remember to brush your pet’s teeth to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Alternatively, offer your pet “chewy” toys.
• Remember to clean your ears with wet wipes.
• The Basenji needs special food – human food is not suitable for it.
