The first impression of Tervuren (Belgian Shepherd Dog) is a well-balanced medium-sized dog, elegant in appearance, firmly standing on all four legs, proudly carrying his neck and head. This dog is strong, agile, well-muscled, alert, and full of vitality. It creates an impression of depth and solidity, without bulkiness. Males must demonstrate undeniable male affiliation; females – have a pronounced feminine appearance, but be judged on a par with males. The Tervuren is a natural breed and does not require extreme positioning at shows. Tervuren demonstrates such qualities as intelligence, courage, vigilance, and devotion to the owner. In addition, the qualities of an excellent shepherd are inherent in dogs of this breed, besides, they protect the person of the owner and his property without undue aggression. These dogs are very attentive, alert when there is no command – they like to move.
The body of these dogs is powerful, but not heavy. The length from the point of the shoulder to the back of the thigh is approximately equal to the height of the dog at the withers. In females the length may exceed the height, but only slightly.
In their relationships with people, Tervuren is very observant and considerate of strangers, but without undue anxiety or fear. He never displays fear or insecurity. He also does not display anger, involuntary or unjustified aggression. He must be approachable, firmly on the ground, and show confidence in facing various circumstances, but not create them.
