Sheltie vs. Collie

They are often confused with each other – collies and Shetland Sheepdogs. Some even believe that this is one breed, and the fact that the Sheltie is shorter is a manifestation of dwarfism. In fact, this is far from the case. These are completely different breeds and their representatives have many different characteristics.

Major Differences

The two outwardly similar breeds do not coincide on the following points:

Origin. The collie has the blood of Irish Setters, Greyhounds, and Labradors in its veins. Sheltie descended from them, and also from Spitz and spaniels.

Security qualities. Shetland Sheepdogs are not adapted to guarding the house. They will not be able to intercede for the owner. Collie, on the contrary, is much more active in this regard.

Dimensions. Much taller than a collie. At the same time, their opponents are lower at the withers by almost 20 cm.

Colors. There are five variants of coat color allowed by the standard for natives of the Shetland Islands. Other pets have only three of them.

The shape of the muzzle. If we compare dogs with each other, then the Sheltie’s muzzle is more elongated. In the latter, it is more rounded.

Temperament. Collie is much lazier and calmer than sheltie. They like to lie on the couch more than to rush through parks or fields.

What Do They Have in Common?

There are similarities between these dogs. So, they just love children. You can hardly expect aggression and domination from them, they will not attack until the very end. They never put up with an evil attitude towards themselves. Physical punishment for such pets is contraindicated.

When choosing between the representatives of the two breeds, keep in mind that collies are more suitable for a cozy homestay. Shelties are more suitable for active pastimes. And the first ones are much better guides.
