A New Zealand man who went to sea to fish was stunned when he pulled a completely transparent creature out of the water, floating around his boat.
Stuart Fraser was fishing with his sons Konahan and Finn 70 kilometers north of the Karikari Peninsula when he saw a translucent creature floating in the upper part of the water.
“I was confused, wondering whether to try to catch it or is it better not to catch an unknown sea creature? However, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to take a closer look. It felt like the creature was covered with rather hard scales. It seemed that there was nothing inside it except orange little drop, “Fraser said in an interview.
Fraser was not alone in the enigmatic creature. The photo of the transparent inhabitant of the depths puzzled all his fisherman friends, who still have not figured out who it could be.
“We have no idea what it is. I would not have believed that this is possible if I had not seen it with my own eyes. Me and my friends, we have never seen anything like this before,” said Fraser.
Nevertheless, Deborah Cracknell of the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, after conducting research, came to the conclusion that the creature caught by the fisherman is called the Salpa maxima.
Paul Cox, director of the National Marine Aquarium, said: “Little is known about these salps, but they are often found in cold seas with the most abundant concentration in the Southern Ocean. Salps are usually barrel-shaped and move by pumping water through gelatinous bodies.”
Among the sea creatures of the salp class, there are quite a few samples little known to science, and each of their detection becomes a real sensation.
