Labrador Retriever: Care & Maintenance

Caring for a Labrador is not too difficult, but there are specifics that must be taken into account.

The Labrador must have its own place, equipped with a couch. The bed can be built from a small, soft but durable rug that is easy to clean and provides good protection from drafts.

It is necessary to tidy up the dog’s place daily, wipe the floor with a damp cloth and clean the bedding. It is recommended to wash the floor with a detergent and disinfectant once a week, and wash the mat. During the molting period, cleaning is recommended twice a day.

The bowl must also be kept clean.

If the Labrador lives in an aviary, its area should be at least 5 – 7 square meters. m, the required elements are a roof and a wooden floor.

Care of the Labrador’s coat is important. The pet needs to be cleaned daily to remove dust, dandruff, dirt, and dead hair. This procedure is a good prevention of skin diseases for the dog, as well as stimulates blood circulation and metabolism.

Labrador care includes water treatments. It is advisable to bathe the Labrador once every 1 – 2 months. The shampoo should not dry out the skin and coat. A good alternative to bathing is rubbing dry shampoo into the coat.

It is necessary to regularly wash and examine your pet’s paws. During walking, the pads of the paws are often injured. Even if the pads are intact, but foreign objects are stuck between the fingers, they can damage soft tissue when moving. If sharp wood chips or pieces of wire become entangled in the fur and cannot be removed with a comb, trim them off with scissors.

1 – 3 times a month brush your dog’s teeth with a toothpaste without strong smell and strong taste. After cleaning, the teeth are thoroughly wiped with a gauze swab or soft paper towel. Do not allow the animal to swallow toothpaste.

The ears of Labradors are constantly accumulating sulfur and dirt, so they need to be cleaned regularly. If dark discharge with an unpleasant odor appears in the ears, the dog often shakes its head and rubs its ears with its paws, you should contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

In caring for a Labrador, proper walking is important. Labrador is an active creature, so walks should be long (2 – 3 hours), at least two walks a day. On walks, you need to give your four-legged friend the opportunity to run, jump, climb the hill. You will need to be in good physical shape.
