Siberian Husky: Temperament

The question “is it worth getting a husky?” It is better to ask yourself before this “wolf cub” appears at your home.

The character of the husky, as in the case of any breed, has its pros and cons and largely depends on the correct upbringing of the husky.

Husky Dog Temperament

There are many virtues in the temperament of a husky: they are friendly, unpretentious, reliable, smart, and love children. But at the same time, it is an energetic, living creature.

Husky is a bad guard. They will not breastfeed the territory from strangers and, in general, are not aggressive towards people. At the same time, independence makes them not very good working dogs. If you try to purposefully develop aggression towards people in the husky, this can result in mental disorders and make the dog dangerous. Therefore, if you want to use your pet as a watchman or bodyguard, it is better to choose a different breed. Normally, huskies are not able to bite a person under any circumstances.

Husky easily gets used to a new place and can live in an apartment. But this requires significant physical activity, long walks, and intellectual “loading”: a general course of training, agility, frisbee, visiting new places, etc.

Among the habits of the husky, you can also mention the tendency to run away. They easily learn to open doors, can dig a tunnel, or jump over a fence. So you need to be vigilant.

The drivers fed the draft dogs only in winter, and in the warm season, they lived on pasture. Therefore, huskies may attempt to hunt birds, mice, cats, and other animals. This can become a source of problems and conflicts with neighbors. Take care of proper feeding of your husky.

Friendly Temperament of a Siberian Husky and Children

Huskies are very smart and completely devoid of aggression towards people, therefore, if you treat the dog correctly, there will be no problems. However, make sure that the dog does not accidentally harm the very young child during violent play.

The most important thing is that the child learns to understand the four-legged friend. A child under 12 years old, as a rule, is very mobile, noisy, and dramatically changes behavior. This can be confusing for the dog. In addition, dogs do not very much welcome close hugs, excessive attention to the paws, tail, attempts to saddle them, or take away toys and food – that is, what children like so much. In this matter, the dog’s opinion should be prioritized.

The dog should be able to retire when tired of childish pranks. Otherwise, even the most good-natured dog can be driven to a frenzy. If a four-legged friend is treated with care, there is no need for him to resort to aggression.

If you are thinking about a dog after having a baby, you should wait until your baby no longer needs continuous grooming and you have free time to establish contact with the dog.

In a family with a child, you should not take a husky, whose psyche was injured during improper training.

The dog should be prepared for communication with the baby: teach endurance, equip a place where the pet could take refuge.

Do not let your child pester a dog that starts yawning, licking its lips, turning away, turning its back, trying to leave. These are signs of nervousness and impending stress.

You should not be allowed to touch the head, back, or paws of a furry friend, yell at him in the face, poke toys, take away dog toys or food.

Organize a pleasant time together for your husky and your baby. The child can treat the dog (in a safe way – with an open palm), help to get ready for a walk, etc.

Poor housing conditions (short walks, inadequate nutrition, illness, etc.) increase the irritation of the husky and reduce the tolerance for the child.

A preschool child should not be left alone with a husky.

Do not forget that representatives of this breed require long active walks. How capable are you of handling both a mobile dog and a small child?

In any case, what kind of relationship will develop between the husky and your child is entirely up to you.
