Can Dogs Have Macadamia Nuts?
Macadamia seeds are generally taboo for dogs. That’s because macadamia nuts are poisonous to dogs.
It is still unclear which poison makes the nuts so dangerous for dogs.
What is certain, however, is that dogs are not allowed to eat macadamia nuts.
How Dangerous are Macadamia Nuts for Dogs?
Even small amounts of macadamia are poisonous to dogs. In addition to allergic reactions and epileptic seizures, consumption can cause painful poisoning. As little as 2 grams of macadamia nuts per kilogram of body weight cause symptoms of poisoning in dogs. For a dog weighing 15 kilograms, this corresponds to about 4 nuts. Symptoms of poisoning include:
- Lethargy and weakness;
- Paralysis in the limbs, stiff hind legs;
- Vomit;
- Muscle tremors and twitching;
- Fever;
- Epileptic seizures;
- Allergic reaction;
- Liver damage.
What to Do If the Dog Has Eaten Macadamia Nuts?
If your dog accidentally eats one of the nuts, watch carefully for symptoms of poisoning. With small amounts, dogs usually recover within 24 to 48 hours without specific treatment. If the symptoms are severe if the dog is in pain or if the symptoms do not subside after a few hours, consult a veterinarian. Even if you are not sure whether your dog has eaten macadamia nuts, we recommend going to the vet.
How Do You Prevent Macadamia Nut Poisoning?
To avoid poisoning, keep the snack in a place that your four-legged friend cannot reach. Only feed non-toxic types of nuts and do not give your dog any nut mixes, as they often contain macadamias.
