The Patterdale Terrier is a robust active terrier that should look compact and proportional. The Patterdale Terrier must be able to chase its prey through narrow passages. If the chest is too large, the dog will not be able to do its job effectively. As a general rule, if you wrap your hands around the terrier’s chest, the fingers of both hands should touch. The height at the withers in the Patterdale Terrier is anywhere between 10 and 15 inches. It is the ability of this breed to work more than indicated in the performance characteristics, their usefulness, and practicality most of all attracts dog breeders. The terrier must have a strong neck, jaws, and teeth, as well as a strong grip to keep prey in the water or reach it in a narrow burrow. They must have great strength, flexibility, and dexterity. Hunting scars and wounds is considered honorable and should not be penalized.
Correctly built and compact, the Patterdale Terrier is wider or slightly longer (proportions measured from the front of the chest to the point of the buttocks) than in height (from the withers to the ground). The back is straight and slightly long, with a muscular, slightly rounded appearance. Slightly sloped, but not steep.
