How to Choose the Right Kitten?

You have long been touched by cats, you are not indifferent to pass by a fluffy ball, and your news feed on a social network can be full of fluffy charms, so it’s time to buy a kitten!

You must clearly understand what is being decided together, and with the joy of owning your beloved pet, you take care of this cute creature.

What should you pay attention to when buying a kitten? How to choose the right kitten?

First of all, you need to decide why you are buying a kitten, do you just want to get a pet or are you making plans for a stellar career for your future pet, wanting to perform and win competitions at professional exhibitions, or maybe you want to start breeding?

If you want to buy a purebred cat, then, first of all, you need to choose the very breed that you like the most. Different breeds of cats distinguish these animals not only by their appearance but even by the peculiarities of their characters and temperaments. There are also differences in the care and maintenance of different breeds.

Be sure to go to a cat show and in reality look at representatives of different breeds

Acquaintance with fluffy cute at the exhibition will allow you to finally decide on the choice of breed. After all, looking at photographs is one thing, but the opportunity to look at animals, at their manners, behaviour, pick up and see all the features closer is quite another! But do not rush to buy a kitten at the show. Unfortunately, there is a possibility that the animal may get sick during the show. It is better to take a pause of two weeks and come directly to the breeder to see the conditions in which the animals are kept.

So, you have decided on the choice of your cat’s breed, the next step, you need to determine where to buy a kitten – this is the choice of a cattery or club!

Today the internet is filled with various advertisements for the sale of all kinds of animals. In order not to run into scammers, you need to read reviews about the company on the Internet, as noted above, be sure to come to the place and see in what conditions the kittens are kept.

Optimally, if the kittens are at home, so they quickly adapt to the home atmosphere, and they will not have to get used to completely new conditions in the event that they grew up outside the house in a special enclosure.

Talk to breeders

Look at their attitude towards their animals, how they feed them, how they take care and look after them. A good breeder is distinguished by a caring and loving attitude towards his pets, for him, it is not just a business, for him, it is his life and inspiration. Do not be surprised if the breeder suddenly asks for your permission to come to visit you to see what conditions the animal will be kept in. After all, a good breeder is sincerely worried about the fate of each of his pet!

Another hallmark of a conscientious breeder is his honesty. He must tell you about the shortcomings of your future pet himself. There are no ideal animals, the number of shortcomings just determines the degree of the pedigree of an animal and its future chances of winning competitions.

Separately, you should talk about the necessary documents for the kitten

If you are offered to purchase an animal without documents, then this kitten does not meet the breed requirements, in fact, it only looks like a representative of a certain breed. Unfortunately, one animal phenotype (its appearance) is not enough to confirm the breed, documents are required. The offspring of an animal without documents will also have no documents. For such kittens, only veterinary passports are issued. This means that the animal is healthy, but not suitable for breeding. Of course, there is no point in giving large sums of money for an essentially purebred pet.

In a thoroughbred kitten, both parents have pedigrees, and a special card is issued for the kitten itself. By the way, it will not be superfluous to look at both parents of the baby, be sure to do it if possible. They should look healthy and behave calmly and complacently, without undue aggression or passivity.

When registering a kitten in the club, the name of the animal fits into the card, which, as a rule, goes well with the name of the cattery. In addition to the nickname, the card contains the kitten’s full name, full names, titles and pedigree numbers of his parents, phone numbers and addresses of the owner of the cattery and his club.

The card indicates the colour, gender date of birth of the kitten, as well as all identified deviations from the breed standard if the expert found them.

The card must be certified by the signatures of the expert and the factory, as well as the club’s seal.

Kitten condition

Before buying, be sure to look at the physical condition of the kitten. He should look healthy, be energetic and active. There are, of course, differences in characters, some cats like to lie around, others – to play. However, you should not take overly active or overly passive, both of these extremes may indicate a kitten’s health deficiencies.

Look at the quality of the coat, it should be smooth and thick, without bald patches, there should be no fleas, a professional breeder should not keep animals in this condition. Pay attention to your eyes, they should not watery or fester. If translucent membranes are visible in the inner corners of the eyes, then the animal is sick. There should be no residues of black sulfur in the ears, this is a sign of an ear mite, the sulfur of a healthy kitten is light and does not have unpleasant odours. Feel the tail; there should be no knots or wrinkles on it. Look at the gums, they should be pink, there should be no bad breath. Examine the anus, there should be no redness on it.

By 12 weeks the kitten should be vaccinated, one vaccination is given at 8 weeks, the second at 11 weeks. Vaccination marks are recorded in the kitten’s veterinary passport. In addition, the kitten must be completely free from external and internal parasites. At the request of the buyer, some clubs offer a kitten chipping service. All this is also recorded in the veterinary passport. Before leaving for a new home, the kitten undergoes hygienic grooming procedures. A good breeder should provide the necessary advice on the care, health and education, as well as give advice on planning the future show career of the animal.
