The coat of a Miniature Schnauzer is different from that of most dog breeds. Usually, it consists of several layers, which include short young, ripe middle, and old – gradually dying off long hairs. It is the last old layer that makes the miniature schnauzer unkempt, it does not perform any important functions. It is quite difficult to remove this hair without the help of specialists and certain procedures. Therefore, from time to time, the Miniature Schnauzer needs to be properly trimmed. This is especially important for schnauzers who take part in exhibitions.

Trimming and Haircuts for Miniature Schnauzers

For the first time, the plucking procedure is carried out when the puppies are 8-9 months old. It is during this period that the first guard hair begins to grow in the dog. It is better to accustom the dog to the procedure gradually, starting with small areas. The main thing is that the pet does not feel discomfort during plucking. Before starting the puppy, it is better to bathe and dry.

Important! Miniature Schnauzers do not have their entire coat trimmed. Individual areas are processed and rendered in a different way.

With the help of scissors, dogs trim the beard, give a triangular shape to the eyebrows. Then the hairs on the hind and front legs are trimmed. After that, they move on to the formation of a skirt, starting from the chest zone and passing to the paws.

Important! Wire-haired miniature schnauzers should go through the pinching procedure every 1.5-2 months, or, as it is also called “rolling”. During rolling, a third of the coat is usually removed. After pinching, it is recommended to carry out a cosmetic haircut. After it, wool remains no longer than 1.5 cm.

Types of Haircuts for Miniature Schnauzers

For representatives of this breed, there are several types of haircuts:

Hygienic. It is performed as the hairs grow back. Such hygienic haircuts are carried out no more than 1 time in 1.5-2 months.

Basic. Includes trimming to straighten and shorten the hairs on the chest, belly, and legs and give the classic shape to the eyebrows and beard.

Exhibition. It is usually carried out in a salon with the assistance of professional groomers. Before haircutting, pets are bathed, applied to the hair with balm. Clipping and trimming aim to give the coat a crisp, standard shape.

Regular trimming leads to the fact that the coat of the miniature schnauzer becomes smooth, well-groomed. Do not pluck too much, as this can degrade the quality of the coat.

Those who have never dealt with representatives of this breed should consult a professional groomer. He will tell you how to care for your pet so that it does not have problems with the coat and looks neat. So, experts recommend:

Obtain the correct and suitable plucking and combing tools. The first brush of a miniature schnauzer that comes across cannot be combed.

Do not forget to wash the coat on the dog’s face, paws, belly. This should be done at least once every three days. For this, you need to purchase a special mild shampoo.

Shear hair that turns into tangles. Dogs that do not attend shows are allowed to trim the tangled top coat much more frequently. And also it can be treated with a special emollient.

It is best to trim representatives of this breed once every six months. A cosmetic haircut is allowed three months after that.
