Pomeranian Husky Mix: What is a Pomsky?
A Pomsky is a husky-dwarf Spitz hybrid. The Huskarian – another name – originated in the USA. A few years ago, the popularity of Pomsky spilled over to Europe and has been growing steadily ever since.
Now some people ask themselves: “How can a husky and a pomeranian mate?” One thing is certain: these two four-legged friends are not able to reproduce naturally due to their size differences.
Therefore, in the first generation, fertilization takes place artificially. An important rule applies here: the female is always a husky and the male is a pomeranian.
The husky-dwarf Spitz hybrid: a surprise package
A Pomsky ideally combines the wolf-like appearance of a husky with the easy-going dwarf Spitz character. But that’s not the rule. However, no one can predict which genes will ultimately dominate in the mixed-breed dog. The breeding of the Pomsky is considered controversial. It probably developed from the idea of creating a cute designer dog or a “light variant of the husky”.
But even if the cuddling factor can hardly be surpassed – as with all dogs, too quick purchase decisions are not advisable. Because both the exterior and the temperament cannot be foreseen beforehand. The term “surprise package” applies to a Pomsky completely!
The Pomeranian
The dwarf spitz reaches a maximum shoulder height of up to 22 cm and is therefore the smallest variety among the spikes. Thanks to his playful and sociable nature, he is an ideal family dog and companion dog for singles. Its lion-like mane and heartwarming smile are characteristic.
The ancestors of the little ball of fur were Kleinspitze from Pomerania. These came to England and were bred a few centimeters smaller there. As a tribute to their homeland, breeders gave them the name “Pomeranians”.
The Husky
Like the dwarf spitz, the husky also belongs to FCI group 5 spitz and dogs of the primordial type. It reaches a size of up to 60 cm and a weight of up to 28 kg. Nordic sled dog fans are impressed by their wolf-like appearance and (partly) blue eyes.
The husky gives the impression of a freedom-loving four-legged friend. But the original breed of dog is very affectionate and does not get along well with being alone. In addition, there is an extra portion of hunting instinct, which must be taken into account when walking in nature.
Pomsky: Size and Colors
There is no guarantee for appearance in adulthood with the Pomsky. After all, it is not an established dog breed with its own standards, but a mixed breed dog. There are big differences, especially in the first and second breeding (F1 and F2). In the litter are therefore Pomskys, which in adulthood are small like the dwarf tip, big like the Siberian Huskies, or medium-sized.
How Big Do Pomskies Get?
If Pomsky’s breeders cross each other in subsequent generations, unity gradually comes into play. The Pomskies from the third or fourth generation tend to be compared in size with small points (approx. 26 cm) or medium points (34 cm).
What Colors are Pomskies?
Without a clear standard, the fur colors continue. The variety of colors ranges from

Pomsky: Eye Color
Many Pomsky breeders strive for a very special trait: the husky’s bright blue eyes. However, the miniature husky can have almost any eye color – from dark brown to amber to green. In addition, different colored eyes (odd-eye) – as can be seen in some huskies – occur.
Pomsky: Temperament
Stubborn like a husky or obedient like a Pomeranian? That cannot be said beforehand. However, there is one thing that Pomsky will most likely take over from his parents: a lively being. The mini-husky is an agile and active four-legged friend who keeps his family on their toes. With good socialization, he is also a friendly and loving companion.
Before adopting it, it is advisable to deal with the hunting instinct. Because the mixed-breed dog can inherit the joy of hunting from its husky ancestors. Since the character and temperament only fully develop in adulthood, a certain dog experience is an advantage with a Pomsky.
Pomsky: Diseases and Life Expectancy
The Pomsky breed is young and has not yet experienced any hype. That benefits the current Pomsky. Unlike many popular purebred dogs like Pugs or Chihuahuas, the Huskarian is not overbred. However, due to their genes, the hybrid dog breed has a certain risk of developing the following diseases:

- Hip dysplasia
- Tracheal collapse
- Alopecia X (skin disease)

- Tendency to tartar
If there is no previous health check of the parent animals during breeding, the offspring can be confronted with hereditary diseases in the course of their lives. Therefore, ask the breeder to present you with a corresponding document, certified by the veterinarian, of both parent animals.

With appropriate utilization and nutrition as well as good care, the average lifespan of a Pomsky is 13-15 years.

The Huskarians have thick fur with an undercoat. Hence, it comes as no surprise that they shed a lot compared to other dog breeds. The brush is often used to rid them of loose fur and to find fewer tufts of fur in the apartment.
Dental care should not be neglected either, as the pomeranian has a tendency to tartar. In addition to healthy food, his people, therefore, value regular checks and, if necessary, brushing their teeth.
On the other hand, the triangular upright ears, which are typical for dogs from the pointy category, are easy to care for. They are less prone to infections than floppy ears and therefore require less care.
How Much Exercise Does a Pomsky Need?
The ancestors of the mini husky were sled dogs that covered kilometers in icy temperatures. The above-average need to run is somewhat curbed with the less persistent dwarf spitz. Still, a Pomsky needs long walks and an active family, with whom he can experience many adventures in nature.
It is just as important to offer variety to the intelligent four-legged friend. A healthy and fully grown Pomsky will enjoy dog sports such as agility, dog frisbee, or dog dancing.
Is a Pomsky Right for Me?
The fluffy four-legged friend is in good hands with people who have a lot of time for them. Both pomeranian and husky are affectionate dog breeds that prefer to be around their humans. In addition, knowledge of dog training is an advantage in the surprise package.
Be careful when looking for a comfortable four-legged friend. The Pomsky cannot keep up with the agile sled dog, but it is still one of the active dog breeds.
Finally, the increased effort for grooming should also be reconsidered. If the family doesn’t mind routine brushing and tufts of fur are not a nuisance, the lively mixed breed dog can move into his new home!

Basically, Pomskies can cost between $1700 and $3300. Think carefully about where to buy your puppy. It is important to ensure that the dog comes from an animal-friendly environment, is healthy, and was raised responsibly.
