Beagle Shedding: Do Beagles Shed a Lot?

Dog hair, as well as human body hair, performs very important functions of protecting the skin from damage, cold, and heat. In addition, the coat is beautiful, especially when it is long, silky, and slightly curled at the ends. However, beagles do not belong to the category of long-haired dogs and their “coat” looks more like needles than silk threads.

Does the Beagle Shed?

Seasonal shedding – in spring and autumn every purebred and non-purebred dog is subject. For some four-legged human friends, molting is almost imperceptible, others – in a couple of weeks, almost completely renew their hair.

Important! The process of hair renewal in spring in dogs begins after the end of frost. It does not last long, but it brings a lot of trouble to people. Autumn molt, on the contrary, is shorter, but much less hair falls out during this period.

Beagles belong to the category of smooth-haired dogs, most of which shed almost imperceptibly in spring and autumn. However, in practice, it turns out that the change of wool in English hunters occurs almost constantly.

Beagle sheds a lot, why?

In beagle living in apartments, seasonal molting is often reinforced by one or two renewals of wool in summer and even in winter. Most owners note this circumstance as one of the significant disadvantages of keeping this breed since thin hairs are rather difficult to remove from the surfaces of upholstered furniture, carpets, and clothing.

The main reasons for the excessive shedding of beagles include:

  • improperly compiled diet, which negatively affects the condition of the dog’s coat;
  • avitaminosis;
  • helminthiasis, fleas, and the presence of other parasites on the skin;
  • metabolic problems;
  • allergic reactions;
  • stress;
  • insufficient air humidity in the room where the pet lives;
  • frequent washing using cheap or unsuitable shampoos.

Regular combing with special furminators from trusted manufacturers will help to cope with excessive shedding. If a dog sheds “at the wrong time” it must be shown to a veterinarian who will help find the cause of the pathology and eliminate its manifestations.
